Message from the UEGF President
 Rolf Hultcrantz, UEGF President | Dear Gastroenterologists Dear Friends
I am the new president of the UEGF since the beginning of this year and would like to start my presidency with thanking Juan Malagelada for many years of devoted work for the Federation. Juan has worked in the UEGF since 1994 and has been instrumental in most of the changes of the Federation.
As president I want to emphasize the continuation of UEGF´s federative approach. With the commitment of all members, UEGF can and should represent European Gastroenterology and with this ambitious goal in mind I will work as an ambassador and intensify the contact to member societies and European national associations. | UEGW | GASTRO 09 - Breaking the record UEGW/WCOG GASTRO 09 marked the end of the year with a record in the history of European Gastroenterology Weeks. An amazing number of 14.892 delegates attended the congress in London. You can download the GASTRO photo album, access the abstracts database and order the highlight DVD here!

| EDUCATION | UEGF Teaching Activity on Basic Science 2010
UEGF invites ambitious, motivated and highly-qualified basic scientists from all over Europe to apply for the UEGF Teaching Activity on Basic Science, held from July 16-18 at the Murray Edwards College in Cambridge, UK. Young researchers with an interest in innate immunity and the Gut are asked to submit an abstract and indicate their career status and future plans in the field. UEGF-EASL Joint Educational Activity 2010
UEGF and EASL jointly organize a Professional Trainee Course on Cholestatic Liver Disease at the Medical Sciences Centre, Oxford, UK from July 8-10. Young trainees with interest in gastroenterology and hepatology from all over Europe are invited to participate in an educational programme of highest quality to widen their knowledge on cholestatic liver disease. Interactive workshops on “Endoscopic interventions, ERCP, Cholestatic liver through the microscope and Drug induced cholestasis” will round up this exceptional programme. UEGF TIGER 2010
The UEGF Education Programme Committee decided to invest in a strategic planning meeting on training innovations and educational resources in GI care to identify the present needs in clinical practice and define targeted educational strategies for the next five years. Educational experts, professionals and stakeholders in GI care will participate in this extraordinary get-together to discuss key challenges, potential target groups and new teaching formats in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. | PUBLIC AFFAIRS | UEGF delegation to meet with European Politicians
To strengthen the voice of gastroenterology on the political level, the UEGF Public Affairs Committee will meet with several European stakeholders in Brussels, such as members of the European Parliament and the European Commission on February 23 and 24, 2010, in Brussels. Prof. Reinhold Stockbrügger, recently elected Chairman of the UEGF Public Affairs Committee and four other experts from UEGF will raise awareness for the most threatening gastrointestinal diseases such as Colorectal Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). | UEGF INSIDE | Identifying Future Trends - a new Committee in place
UEGF sets up a Future Trends Committee that will identify and characterize important emerging trends in research and clinical practice pertaining to all areas of gastroenterology and related fields. Its purpose is to assess the impact these developments will have on patients, physicians and nurses in the upcoming years and to advise the UEGF decision makers on steps to be taken. Rest assured that you will hear a lot from this visionary Committee in the next years!
UEGF Lifetime Achievement Award 2010 – Call for nominations We would like to remind you to nominate candidates for the prestigious UEGF Lifetime Achievement Award honouring outstanding accomplishments in gastroenterology. UEGF accepts nominations from UEGF member societies, national gastroenterological societies and self nominations until March 31, 2010. Please click here to find out more.
Research Prize 2010 – Call for applicants
The prize of € 100,000 will be awarded again for excellence in basic science or translational or clinical research within the specialty. Applicants are asked to visit the UEGF website for more information on the prize and for application procedures! The UEGF Scientific Committee is looking forward to receiving your application until May 9, 2010.
Digestive Oncology to join forces with UEGF
 | The European Society of Digestive Oncology was founded in 2008 as an association of members of national societies and study groups of digestive oncology in countries of Europe. Its aim is to improve and propagate medical treatment of Gl-tract tumours and to enhance and promote the screening, early detection, primary prevention and management of pre-malignant and malignant disease of the Gl-tract. ESDO will further focus on organizing education and academic exchange in the field of digestive oncology. UEGF welcomes ESDO as a new associate member society!
