WGO is Proud to Announce the Theme of
World Digestive Health Day 2010: Inflammatory Bowel Disease
2010: Year of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

While IBD was predominately a disease of developed countries from the middle of the twentieth century, in recent years there have been rising incidence rates in developing countries. During 2010 WGO wishes to underscore the emergence and complexities of IBD to doctors in developed and developing countries. Our focus is on optimizing diagnostic approaches and maximizing patient care to enhance the quality of life of IBD patients and to help inform their health care providers worldwide.

Considering the significant social impact of IBD on a global scale and the lack of knowledge about IBD in developing countries, WGO focuses the attention of the international gastroenterology community on May 29, 2010, and throughout 2010, on IBD.

The Profound Impact of the WGO Train the Trainers Workshop in Santiago, Chile
Train the Trainers Workshop in Santiago, Chile

To address a common problem among gastroenterologists, the lack of pedagogic training, WGO Train the Trainers workshops offer intensive and interactive 4 day sessions dedicated to the development of teaching and training skills. The TTT workshop in Santiago, Chile, was a result of the close cooperation between the Chilean and Argentinean GI societies, the AGA and the WGO. Participants from all over the world praised this latest TTT for having a long-lasting impact on their professional development as not only doctors, but as teachers. The WGO Training Center in Santiago hosted the TTT and generously devoted time and resources to ensure the smooth transition from general sessions to break out sessions in small groups. The skilled faculty which comprised of the world’s top gastroenterologists, including the WGO president, Eamonn Quigley, interacted continuously with the TTT participants. This close cooperation ensured putting into practice the WGO TTT goal to improve the education and training standards of those who care for patients with digestive disorders.

A New Feature Complements the WGO Global Guidelines: The Virtual Room of Gastroenterology
Visit the WGO Global Guidelines library and access VRG

The Virtual Room of Gastroenterology (VRG), a comprehensive information platform for gastroenterologists, is a joint effort between WGO and the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the National University of La Plata, Argentina. This new feature is easily accessible from the WGO website, is based on the PubMed platform and can capture and store search strategies as web addresses. Based on these embedded search strategies, a medical library has been created. Thanks to the enormous efforts of Prof. Dr. Osvaldo M. Spinelli (UNLP, Argentina), Prof. Dr. Eduardo Henderson (UDELAR, Uruguay) and WGO’s in-house information expert Justus Krabshuis, customized searches are now possible for 28 topics such as Celiac Disease, Liver Cirrhosis, Gallstone Disease, Colorectal Neoplasms, Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors and Barrett’s Esophagus, which all complement WGO’s 21 Global Guidelines. The Virtual Room of Gastroenterology includes a Spanish version of the site and in the future Cascade search strategies for each guideline topic, allowing a search for alternative, resource sensitive solutions for the diagnosis and management of digestive diseases will also be added to the special VRG services.
