Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to 2016!

I would like to share with you the exciting developments currently taking place at our WGO Training Centers. WGO’s 23 Training Centers are critical to WGO’s identity as a unique international organization. Our centers provide training and education opportunities, providing training opportunities where the need is the greatest. Trainees learn and improve their clinical skills so they can return and provide the best possible care to underserved populations worldwide. The Training Center Online Reporting system has been remodeled for 2016, allowing Training Centers to directly access and upload information about their centers. Using our new WGO website the Training Centers can apply for support for educational activities at their centers and can nominate exceptional trainees for a distinguished WGO Scholarship. All three of these new initiatives will provide feedback on the impact of our centers and allow WGO to better assess our Training Centers’ strengths and needs.

Training Center Online Reporting
We are pleased to announce the launch of the revised Online Reporting system for the WGO Training Centers. Available via our newly relaunched website, the Training Center Online Reporting system provides our centers with the tools to track and record all of the work that takes place at their center over the course of a year. The information collected will serve as a valuable resource for WGO to better understand what exactly goes on at each of our Training Centers. The data collected will be used to showcase to GI and liver organizations and industry the effect our centers have on improving local gastroenterology and hepatology knowledge and patient care.

Educational Activity Funding Program
The Educational Activity Funding Program was created to directly promote Training Center activities that best support the WGO Training Center mission. An eligible activity is one that promotes or strengthens a region’s knowledge in gastroenterology, hepatology, and related fields, be it through public awareness or specific training for individuals in the medical field. Through this new program, WGO will be able to more accurately judge the effectiveness of our contributions on the quality of programming at our Training Centers in their respective regions around the globe.

Scholarship Program
The WGO Training Center mission is to establish and nurture core training centers for primary and advanced GI and liver training in locations of need, thereby improving the standard of training at a grass roots level while ensuring a focus on regionally-relevant diseases. One of the ways identified to support WGO in this mission is the direct establishment and support of “Scholars” at the WGO Training Centers. The Scholarship Program will ensure a longer time frame for a trainee to spend at a center, increasing their learning opportunities and outcomes. The designation of “WGO Scholar” is more than receiving a monetary scholarship and title, the individual also receives the unique distinction of being an Individual Member of WGO during the year of their training. Individual membership will officially launch in this first quarter of 2016.

In the inaugural year of this program, the WGO Training Centers nominated exceptional trainees that have expressed a wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of gastroenterology at a WGO Training Center. We look forward to announcing these talented individuals soon. Our Scholars come from all over the world to attend our Training Centers, and this is our opportunity to encourage other gastroenterologist and hepatologists in training to pursue this same dream.

Our 23 Training Centers have accomplished amazing work in spreading and improving the quality of GI and liver training in areas of need. These new initiatives are meant to foster the desire to see our centers enhance the availability of training while continually improving the quality. I anticipate we will learn a great deal about how each of our unique centers operate, which will give us the knowledge to focus on how best to support the training being offered at these amazing facilities. I invite you to learn more about each of the WGO Training Centers at www.worldgastroenterology.org/education-and-training/training-centers.

The next WGO Train the Trainers Workshop will be held in Antalya, Turkey from 4-7 April 2016

Since 2001, the Train the Trainers (TTT) program, developed by WGO, exposes educators in gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy, oncology and GI surgery to current educational techniques and philosophies. It brings together faculty and participants from across the globe in an intensive and interactive four day workshop. The workshop is characterized by numerous hands-on sessions with ample opportunity for discussion and interchange. This has proven to be a highly successful method of disseminating teaching skills to GI physicians who hold training positions in their own countries. Delegates are equipped with skills which they can then implement in their countries.

Applications Accepted till Friday, 18 September 2015

The application process is still open and we invite all WGO Member Societies to nominate physicians for this workshop who are both fluent in English and leaders or up and coming leaders in their field (Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, Hepatology or GI Surgery). To view the requirements and to download the application form click here.

With TTT limited to 50 participants, we encourage you to nominate your candidates before Friday, 18 September 2015. Please note that because this workshop is considered a benefit of WGO Membership, preference will be given to societies who have paid their WGO membership dues through 2015.

Should you have any questions, please contact Stephanie Sehrbrock, WGO Program Manager of Training & Education, at ssehrbrock@worldgastroenterology.org.

WGO Emblem Stands for a High Standard of Quality

The World Gastroenterology Organization does many things. In doing these the WGO emblem is used to indicate that the organization is involved in that activity. Many of our colleagues and our member societies seek to use the WGO emblem in the promotion of their events. They do so with the view that having the WGO endorsement conveys a standard; usually one of quality and one to be aspired to.

In this communication I wish to list how in some of the activities of WGO this high standard is achieved and maintained.

Training Centres:

WGO has 23 designated Training Centres around the world. At these centres the aim is to achieve the highest possible standard of training in Gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy. The standard is defined by the directors of the centres who together define what determines excellence at a WGO training centre. It would be dishonest to claim that all of the WGO centres at this point in time have achieved the standard that we would all aspire to. However what we can be sure of is that all are aiming to continue improving their processes, their structures and their training so that the highest quality of teaching be achieved. The centres report their activities and the outcomes are discussed at meetings of the directors. Further quality control measures are in place and over the next few months these shall be reported and discussed. At Gastro2015 on September 28th the quality of activities at the WGO centres shall be reviewed.

One fact is undeniable, however, having the WGO emblem at the entrance of a Training Centre is an assurance that this is a place aiming for the highest of standards in training.

Train the Trainers:

This workshop, started in 2001, has grown in stature and popularity since its inception. It is extensively reviewed, by both faculty and attendees so that it is regenerated after each workshop. Experienced faculty with expertise in adult education are involved and its enduring success and popularity speaks to its quality and high standard.

Guidelines:

The WGO guidelines are unique. They are evidenced based ensuring their accuracy and quality. They are renewed and hence current. They are translated into 6 different languages and hence can be read in a language comfortable for the reader. Most importantly they use the cascade format, unique to WGO guidelines which uses evidence to make recommendations for treatment dependent on the resources available. The WGO label on the guidelines is an assurance of their quality, independence and currency.

Endorsement of Meetings held by Member Societies:

The WGO member societies often seek endorsement for meetings that they sponsor. WGO provides the endorsement after review of the programme by the WGO Scientific Programme Committee. Endorsement is given when the committee can be satisfied that what is included is current, independent and aimed at providing a valuable educational experience for attendees. The review process takes close to a month to achieve as quality review takes time. The WGO emblem can only be used when the Scientific Programme Committee is satisfied that a quality programme is being offered.

GASTRO2015:

Beginning on September 28th a week of the highest standard of gastroenterology conference shall take place in Brisbane, Australia. This conference marks the beginning of a two yearly cycle of World Gastroenterology Congresses. The congress shall be unique in that it is the only World Congress which encompasses all aspects of Gastroenterology. It is unique as it will incorporate programmes which can only be delivered when leaders in Gastroenterology representing all of the world are involved. A high quality standard is achieved by selecting faculty who have demonstrated in recent years by their publications and contributions to be the world leaders in gastroenterology. The WGO emblem shall be prominently displayed providing an assurance of high quality.

I look forward to welcoming you to Brisbane.
